A typical 5-stage prep process before a coating application

1. Wash & decontamination
A thorough exterior wash to strip off dirt, road grime, and surface contaminants, followed by a clay bar (or chemical decontamination) pass to pull embedded particles out of the paint that washing alone won't remove — brake dust, tar, industrial fallout, tree sap.

2. Paint correction / polishing
Machine polishing or compounding to correct swirl marks, light scratches, and oxidation, and to level the paint surface. This step is adjusted to the condition of the vehicle's paint and is what the gloss and reflection of the final coating depends on.

3. Panel wipe-down / final decontamination
Once polishing is done, the surface gets washed again and wiped with an isopropyl alcohol (IPA) or dedicated panel-prep solution to strip away any polishing oils or residue — this ensures nothing is left behind that could interfere with the coating bonding to the paint.

4. Drying & surface inspection
Full drying of every panel, seam, and trim gap (often with a compressed air gun to chase water out of joints), plus a check under lighting for any missed defects before coating goes on.

5. Taping & masking
Masking off trim, emblems, rubber seals, and any areas that shouldn't be coated, so the coating goes exactly where intended without bleeding onto adjacent surfaces.
